The weekend started with a cool sunny day in Estes park, but the forecast called for rain late morning and on through the day and it was move day for us. Our adventures in Estes Park had run out and it was time to pack-up, unhook and take to the road before the rain started. Next stop Breckenridge, CO.
We were lucky to get a spot so we were able to arrive a day early at Tiger Run. After driving through rain up the I-70 pass to the Eisenhower tunnel, we hit pay dirt with bright blue skies, the tall Rocky Mountains and golden aspen. After getting to our site, the rain caught back up to us, but this time it turned to snow. While we are not really fans of snow, fall snow in the mountains provides a gorgeous contrast with the green pines and the yellow aspen.
Sunday was another move day for us, but just to our “permanent” site. We spent the morning walking around the park and enjoying the mountain scenery. Then after lunch we took off to spend the afternoon in Breckenridge. A fun and lovely little town with tons of character. While we were there we picked up some information on places to eat and visit .
The weather really turned great on Monday, so we got up early and headed up to Loveland pass. The pass in on U.S. Hwy 6 and is the old way around the mountains before the Eisenhower Tunnel was built on I-70. It crosses the Continental Divide at 11,990 ft and the views were breathtaking, literally. Just near the pass is a small turnout to Pass Lake, a wonderful little mountain lake formed by only runoff. We were able to get out and walk the trail around the lake. Our dog, Maggie, even got to go on the trail.
With a day that was so nice, we decided to continue our adventure and head over to Silverthorne and drive up Hwy 9 to Heeney. The sun was out and with all the color, it was a great drive along the Blue River. We stopped for lunch at a quiet forest service campground right on the Blue River. Another chance for Maggie to get in the water and explore. While the drive up Hwy 9 was nice, the real color was on the small Heeney road that encircled the reservoir.
Forecast is for rain the next couple of days, so our plans are correspondingly flexible. Stay tuned, we still have a week left here and have more adventures planned.
Head to Glenwood Springs for the hot springs spa. Pretty drive down to the Canyon. Visit Vail and Snowmass. This is where we lived for 3 awesome years. Hated to leave. Awesome golf courses in GS.
We are headed that way this weekend. Not sure we will be able to stop in the spa, but want to see the area. Aspens are in full color in that area right now.
