What a perfect start to our new travel blog! A visit to our son and daughter-in-law (who is also a blogger) who suggested the title for our blog a long time ago. This past weekend we headed down to Kansas City, Roeland Park to be exact, for a fun filled visit.
It is a simple straightforward drive down, we have done it a dozen times. But this time, we saw something we had never seen before, portable road signs warning us of traffic congestion. Now, we have all seen these before, but the message was the new part. “Watch for Solar Eclipse Traffic”. That part of Missouri was in the path of totality and they were anticipating thousands of visitors. Fortunately for us, the signs were there only in preparation, as the actual event was still a few days away.
Sorry, back to the story. A great weekend in KC always starts with a fine meal out, and this weekend was no exception. Our first dinner was at Rye, a southern midwestern restaurant in the trendy area of Mission Farms. OUTSTANDNG! But what dinner would be complete without the perfect dessert. Hello Freezing Moo! They do Thai stir-fried ice cream, or “ice pan” ice cream, made on a steel plate chilled to at least 16 degrees. You pick ingredients and they mix it all together. Yum!
Saturday morning started with a Yoga Class, not for us, but for our daughter-in-law who is a Corepower yoga instructor. The rest of us just sat around and drank coffee and ate cinnamon rolls. A fun day hanging out until our marque event of the weekend, an Escape Room challenge. Our adventure was at Novus Escape Rooms
The room we picked was Teraforma, the objective was to escape from our asteroid-struck space station and still save Earth. This was like the ultimate live-action board game of Clue. There were 9 different puzzles we had to solve, each one in sequence, to “escape”. Needless to say, it was an adventure. Put two Type-A control freaks in a small room, with their wives, make all four of them solve puzzles and not kill anyone in the process. Well, needless to say we all survived, though we were just finishing our last puzzle when time ran out. It was a true team event as each of us can claim credit to providing the key idea to solving a puzzle. If you have not tried an Escape Room before, we highly recommend it.
Finally, what is becoming a KC tradition for this group, we headed out on Sunday morning for breakfast at a restaurant in a fun trendy area. The primary qualification is fresh breakfast menu and a build your own Bloody Mary bar. Well Ollie’s was the choice this time and it succeeded with the highest marks. Great breakfast potatoes and Bloody Mary’s to die for. 10 out of 10.
All in all a great weekend visit with a great couple we are so proud of. A good time was had by all.
Until the next adventure….
